History of Skrappy 1413
Skrappy began the rookie year in 2004 – participating in FIRST Frenzy at VCU Regional. They won the Rookie Inspiration Award. At that time team 1413 was known as Circuit Breakers. It remained “Circuit Breakers throughout 2004 and 2005. The name changed to Skrappy Zoo and Team 1413 continued to participate in the VCU Regional events from 2004 through 2010.
Skrappy participated in the North Carolina Regional in Raleigh, NC. In 2011.
In 2011, Skrappy’s Zoo was visited by President Barrack Obama. He met each of the team members and signed the robot. The team provided him with a demonstration of the robot skills for that year.
In 2012, Skrappy again participated in North Carolina Regional Events in Raleigh< NC. Skrappy competed in Raleigh regional events from 2011 through 2015.
In 2016, FIRST Robotics revamped their district model. Skrappy (Team 1413) was allowed to participate in two events, the first being in Blacksburg, VA and the second being in Hampton, VA. In Blacksburg, the robot placed _4th out of 34 teams. In Hampton, VA, Skrappy placed 13th out of 35 teams. Skrappy’s team members also received the award for “Gracious Professionalism” at the Hampton, VA competition. Team 1413 won placement to attend the District Championship in Baltimore, Md. There the team placed 24 out of 58 teams, which was one spot away from going to World Competition in Kansas City. Last year, Skrappy again made it to the District Championship for competition against the best of the best.
This year, we have 20 students enrolled as members of the robotic team (18 males and 2 females), along with 4 school mentors and 5 community mentors (total) that work after school to direct the students. Areas of expertise include, programming, electrical, web design, building, marketing, safety, team morale, and ‘gracious professionalism’. All students are expected to earn their spot on the team and to work a required number of hours to travel to the various locations.
This year, as it trains a new drive team for the 2020 season, the Bluestone High School First Robotics team and its robot, Skrappy, participated in the Blue Ridge Brawl preseason competition in Salem, Va., Oct. 4-5, 2019. It will also compete at Rumble in the Road in Newport News, VA on November 1-, 20019.
The Skrappy drive team offered live demonstrations to the public from 4-6 p.m. at the South Central Fair in Chase City on Saturday, Oct. 12, in the Education Building.
On November 16, 2019, Clarksville Library is sponsoring “Skrappy gets a library card” for robotic research on the new game, and demonstrations and public service to youngsters who visit there.
The game for the 2020 First Robotics competition season will be released on Jan. 4, 2020. The theme is based on the Star Wars movies, with this teaser announcement on the First Robotics website: “Throughout history, great civilizations have risen, then fallen. Now it’s our turn to rise — building and bolstering our own planetary metropolis. This 2019-2020 season, FIRST RISE SM, powered by Star Wars: Force for Change, is setting out to inspire citizens of the galaxy to work together, strengthening and protecting the force that binds us and creating a place where collaboration and collective wisdom can elevate new ideas and foster growth.
